How we help people get back to work after a stroke:

Getting back to work after a stroke can be a challenge, but it can be done. There are many benefits in returning to work, not just financial. The Stroke Foundation's Return to Work Advisors provide the expertise and support to guide you through this process.

The service is funded by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and is free for New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged between 17 and 64. This service is available nationwide.

Your medical professional can refer you to our service by using one of our referral forms, or you can reach out to our team by calling 0800 STROKE (0800 78 76 53) or emailing help@stroke.org.nz.

How the service works:

It’s good to start working with your Return to Work Advisors as soon as possible after your stroke. This is to ensure your job remains open for you to return to, or to have further discussions with your employer about a modified role. Your Advisor will also help you to understand your rights as an employee.

Once you are getting closer to returning to work, your Advisor will carry out a full assessment to learn about your skills, your Return-to-Work goals, and what's stopping you working just now. They will also connect you with other supports you may need.

We’ll then prepare a plan with you to help you achieve your Return-to-Work goals. This will be tailor-made for you.

While you’re working through your plan and with your permission, your Advisor will also be working with your employer so they can give you the right support to make your return as easy as possible.

When both you and your employer are ready for your return to work, your Advisor will support and monitors your return. You may start part time and then build up to full time. This support ensures the best outcome for you and your employer.
