How a children's book is changing the lives of stroke surviors
Gregory the Kiwi is no normal children's picture book, the story behind the story will melt your heart.

After experiencing a devastating stroke in 2023, it seemed like Gregory Saunders' art was a closed chapter in his life.
But now his unique way of viewing the world has been given a new life, and his family is on a mission to share his creativity with the world.
Gregory was born in Te Kuiti and always had a love of drawing. He liked to draw pictures inspired by the King Country and what he saw in his everyday life – like sheep shearing, rugby, and the Waitomo Caves.
But despite his passion, he often ended up throwing his finished drawings out, assuming they weren't good enough to be shared.
In 2023, Gregory experienced a stroke that resulted in him moving into full-time care.
When his family were clearing his house, they were stunned to find a stash of Gregory's drawings. Gregory's sister, Carol, also had a small collection of his drawings that he'd given her in the past. Gregory's nephew, Bevan, and Bevan's wife, Niki, knew instantly how special this discovery was.
"This art was far too fantastic for the world to not ever see, so we asked Gregory for his blessing to turn his art into a children's book."
Niki and Bevan spent months deciding the perfect words to go along with Gregory's illustrations, and Niki used water colours to finish bringing the story to life.
Eventually, "Gregory the Kiwi" was ready to be shared with the world.
Not only is "Gregory the Kiwi" a beautiful tribute to Gregory and his artwork, it is also supporting stroke survivors all across Aotearoa.
For every copy of the book sold, $2 will be donated to Stroke Aotearoa on behalf of Gregory.
Since its release only a month ago, "Gregory the Kiwi" has already sold over 100 copies.
After years of not believing his artwork was good enough, now Gregory’s art is shared for all and changing lives.
