Take Charge After Stroke

Take Charge After Stroke (Take Charge) is a programme designed specifically to increase independence and improve quality of life after stroke.

Originally designed by Māori for Māori, Take Charge is evidence-based and person-centred. It has been adopted by several countries, including the UK, Canada, and Germany. Despite being a homegrown programme originally for Māori and Pacific whānau affected by stroke, Take Charge is not yet funded in New Zealand.

Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand self-funded a pilot of Take Charge and rolled out training to its community team in 2022. It is now our intention to provide training to others working in health and community roles across the country so that the thousands of stroke survivors in Aotearoa can be supported to have better outcomes and improved quality of life after stroke.
